Why is the CV so important?
The main hurdle!
There is a lot of talk about case interviews. In reality, though, the biggest hurdle for anyone wanting to join consulting is the CV screening. Out of 100 candidates applying for a job, 80 won't pass this first step. Without a strong CV, you won't be among the 20 that get invited and can prove themselves in the interview process.
Your calling card
A CV isn't just a chronological listing of your experiences. It's your very first work sample. You need to produce a strong document that demonstrates some key consulting abilities. So, from storytelling to visual design, a CV showcases many elements that are also relevant for client documents. If you can produce a great CV, recruiters will be more likely to picture you on one of the firm's consulting teams.
Prepare for interviews
By writing a strong CV, you can also reflect on your profile as a whole. What are your strengths and weaknesses? What are your main achievements? Where have you displayed great leadership? All of this will help you better understand yourself. This exercise alone is incredibly useful in preparing for interviews. In the interview process, you will have to tell stories about yourself and your experiences. The CV writing process can help you identify and develop these stories.
Sell yourself
Whether you like it or not, every job is related to sales – in one way or another. For you as a candidate that means presenting yourself in the best possible light. It's not about bragging, it's not about lying. It's about showing strong experiences, talking about them confidently, and understanding the impact you created. Humility is misplaced here, all the other candidates are selling themselves as well. Don't let them win just because they sell themselves better. And once you're on the job, you have to sell results, convince people of your ideas, and ultimately sell projects. See the CV as your medium to sell yourself.
